Big things are happening at Lelu: Growing our team!

Big things are happening at Lelu: Growing our team!

My heart is full, my cheeks hurt– it’s been an incredible week. In our team check out today, I shared that this has been my favorite work week ever. BEST WORK WEEK EVER. That’s a big deal, right?!

Why has it been the best work week ever? Our dream team is growing and it makes my heart burst. They say that the journey of an entrepreneur is lonely, and I think that might be why I’m so happy. Growing our team means less loneliness! Finding people who understand what you’re building and why you’re building it and who want to come join you — it feels magical.

But to find two absolute rockstars at once has just felt like an absolute fairytale. Hiring experts say you should hire people who are better than you and I’m really proud to say we’ve done just that. I’m so thrilled to share thatKelly Berndand Jessica Gutierrez have joined our full-time team to fill two very important roles! I’ll introduce them bellow:

Fulfillment and Operations Manager

Internally we’ve been joking that once we filled the Fulfillment and Operations role this person would be my favorite. Why? Because they would be taking over critical pieces of the business that I’ve had to manage single handedly and would relieve so much off of my plate. Kelly Bernd is already exceeding all of my highest expectations.

Kelly is an absolute rockstar. She went to the top public University in California and a quick Google search of her name will pull up hundreds of photos of her blazing trails on the UCLA Track and Cross Country teams. She graduated from UCLA in 2020 with a degree in Environmental Studies and Geography with a Minor in Spanish. After graduating, Kelly spent two years working at the University of California, San Diego, where she managed teams within the university's COVID Response Team.

Kelly’s mom, Helen, who I had the great pleasure of meeting last week, has a contagious passion for bilingualism and says she would have loved to have Lelu for her kids when they were younger. It was clear to me where Kelly learned to value and treasure her wonderful bilingualism.

Kelly is already making waves at our HQ. In her role, she will build out our operations and manage our physical space as we scale and expand. I can’t imagine someone better for the task.

Growth Marketing Leader

I have a love-hate relationship with this statement: “Oh my gosh! I’d been looking for something like this for years! I’m so glad I finally found Lelu!” On the one hand, I’m so glad they found us! On the other hand, I’m so sad it took so long! Jessica is joining our team to fix this.

We know Lelu is making a huge difference for bilingual families, and it’s time to reach more families who are craving the transformative support we provide!

The first time I met Jessica, we both felt we’d been divinely set up– it was crazy all that we had in common. Both daughters of Mexican and Nicaraguan immigrants! Both the first in our families to go to college and get our MBAs. Both moms desperate to give our kids the beautiful gift of bilingualism. Both living in the same area. And on and on. Meeting Jessica felt like finding a work soulmate. (I know it sounds a bit dramatic, but seriously it did.) And I knew that even with all the similarities, Jessica would be BETTER than me at filling our marketing needs. She was the one!

Jessica earned a BA in international relations from the University of Southern California and an MBA in marketing from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Jessica joins the team with over 10 years of experience in the education industry. Most recently, she was working at Udemy, where she spent 4 years with Udemy’s Content and Marketing teams, leading the D2C SEO content marketing efforts. Her role at Lelu will be to spread the scope of our impact. She is going to rock our world and I cannot wait.

Now, I can’t end this blog without mentioning Mathieu, Jordan and Marielos (who just came back from maternity leave! Another big reason why this was the best work week). These three have been the core of our team for the last year plus, and we couldn’t have gotten to this important point without them. Each of them are absolute rockstars in their own right and this week wouldn’t have been the best ever without them either.

I am overwhelmed by the privilege to get to work with each of these individuals and I’m confident that together we will make a huge difference for the future of bilingualism.
